The Toronto Blue Jays have exercised a two-year option on reliever Chad Green's contract, the team announced Monday.
The move pays Green $21 million over two years.
The Blue Jays and Green had numerous options on the contract. The club could have exercised a three-year, $27-million deal and, if that was declined, Green had the option to opt into a one-year, $6.25-million contract.
The third option — the two-year deal — was picked up by the Blue Jays.
It's a strong indication that the Blue Jays believe strongly in Green, who returned from Tommy John surgery to post a 5.25 ERA with 16 strikeouts compared to four walks in 12 innings this past summer.
