Blue Jays non-tender RHP Dillon Tate

Dillon Tate's short tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays has come to an end.

Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi reported Friday that the team was not expected to tender a contract to the right-handed reliever, sending him to free agency.

The Blue Jays later confirmed the move.

According to Nicholson-Smith, Tate, who had arbitration rights, was projected to be awarded a $1.9 million salary ahead of next season.

Tate, 30, was picked up on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 1. He pitched 3.1 innings, owning a 5.40 ERA with three walks and four strikeouts.

Considered a top prospect, the Texas Rangers selected Tate fourth overall at the 2015 MLB Draft. He spent time with the Rangers and New York Yankees organizations before he was traded to the Orioles. He made his MLB debut on July 16, 2019.

Across 215.2 innings in the majors, Tate owns a 4.09 ERA with nine saves and 170 strikeouts with a 7-14 record.

Toronto also non-tendered closer Jordan Romano, avoided arbitration with Erik Swanson on a one-year, $3 million deal and tendered contracts to all of their other eligible players.
