Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Chad Green and Hyun-Jin Ryu are recovering well from Tommy John surgery and are still aiming for a return later this season, general manager Ross Atkins told reporters Monday.
Both pitchers are both currently in Dunedin throwing bullpens and could start facing hitters as soon as next month.
Green, 31, underwent his surgery on June 1 last year after appearing in 14 games for the New York Yankees. The right-hander had pitched in seven seasons with the Yankees, posting a 3.17 ERA in 383.2 innings with 494 strikeouts.
He joined the Blue Jays this off-season on a two-year, $8.5 million deal that includes options for 2025 and 2026.
Ryu's surgery followed Green's by just 17 days. He had the operation on June 18, after his sixth start of 2022 for Toronto.
The 36-year-old is in the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract, signed leading into the 2020 season.
Since becoming a Blue Jay, Ryu has thrown 263 innings with a 4.07 ERA. He also finished third in Cy Young voting after his debut season with Toronto in 2020.
The Blue Jays' pitching staff as a whole currently ranks 12th in MLB with a 3.93 ERA
