Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman told the media Saturday that he will not be attending the MLB All-Star game after being selected for the second time in his career.
Instead, Gausman will use the "break as a break" and spend the week with his family.
Gausman did say he was honoured to be selected to represent the American League, but also pointed out that he's "never been at this many innings at the break" and could use the rest.
The 32-year-old right-hander has had a fantastic first half of the season for the Blue Jays, as he leads the American League in strikeouts with 153. His 7-5 overall record does not tell the whole story, as he has often been the victim of a lack of run support from the Blue Jays offence.
Blue Jays fans will still be able to watch some of their favourite players during the All-Star festivities as Valdimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Whit Merrifield were all selected as reserve players. Guerrero Jr. will also compete in Monday's Home Run Derby for the second time in his career.
Fans can watch the Home Run Derby live from Seattle Monday night on Sportsnet and SN NOW beginning at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. Then fans can watch the All-Star Game Tuesday night on Sportsnet and SN NOW beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET/ 4:30 p.m. PT.
