Jordan Romano is on the path back to the big leagues after undergoing elbow surgery in early July.
According to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling, the 31-year-old right-hander is expected to begin a throwing progression next week. Romano initially had surgery to repair an impingement in his right elbow on July 3.
Although Romano's return to MLB in 2024 was up in the air, Zwelling reported that the Toronto Blue Jays intend to have him back with the club before the end of the season.
Romano had a difficult beginning to his season, starting the year on the injured list after receiving an anti-inflammatory injection in spring training. He returned on April 16 but went back on the IL before getting another injection and undergoing the surgery.
The Markham, Ont. native struggled to a 6.59 ERA over 13.2 innings when he managed to take the mound for Toronto. He picked up eight saves, but struggled to keep the ball in the yard, allowing four home runs.
Romano was named an All-Star in 2023 and climbed to third all-time in Blue Jays history with his 105th career save on May 29.
For his career, Romano has a 2.90 ERA with 285 strikeouts over 229.2 innings.
