As MLB’s off-season calendar rolls on, many teams and players will avoid arbitration Thursday while others will move one step closer to an arbitration hearing.
By Thursday evening at 8 p.m. ET, all arbitration eligible players and their teams must formally submit their arbitration filing numbers for the upcoming season. That process typically leads to agreements and even some extensions, while others don’t find common ground and file separate numbers instead, with hearings set later in the winter to choose a winner.
It was a significant day for the Toronto Blue Jays, who managed to avoid arbitration with nearly all of their eligible players, including Jordan Romano, Daulton Varsho and Cavan Biggio, among others.
They were unable to reach an agreement with first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., meaning they will head to arbitration unless they can agree on a multi-year deal.
With the deadline passed, here is a look at all of the Blue Jays who have come to terms on a deal to avoid arbitration (note that Bo Bichette signed an extension covering his arbitration years, meaning he’s no longer a part of this process):
• Catcher Alejandro Kirk avoided arbitration with a $2.8-million deal.
• Catcher Danny Jansen avoided arbitration with a $5.2-million deal.
• Reliever Erik Swanson avoided arbitration with a $2.75-million deal.
• Reliever Tim Mayza avoided arbitration with a $3.59-million contract.
• Reliever Genesis Cabrera avoided arbitration with a $1.5125-million deal.
• Closer Jordan Romano avoided arbitration with a $7.75-million deal. Romano has one more arbitration year before hitting free agency.
• Infielder Cavan Biggio avoided arbitration with a $4.21-million contract.
• Outfielder Daulton Varsho avoided arbitration with a $5.65-million deal.
• Infielder Santiago Espinal avoided arbitration with a $2.725-million contract.
• Reliever Nate Pearson avoided arbitration with a $800,000 contract.
• Reliever Trevor Richards avoided arbitration with a $2.15-million contract.
Remaining Blue Jays (MLB Trade Rumors salary projection)
