The Toronto Blue Jays will have to make their push for the playoffs without catcher Danny Jansen.
Jansen had surgery on his right middle finger on Thursday and will be out for the remainder of the regular season. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said a post-season return for the catcher has not been ruled out should Toronto make the playoffs.
The Blue Jays catcher injured himself last week in a game against the Colorado Rockies. He took a ball off his right hand off a foul tip by Nolan Jones.
"One of those things as a catcher, it's a pretty freak injury," Schneider said after the game. "It seems like those are kind of coming in bunches right now."
The team called up catcher Tyler Heineman from triple-A to backup Alejandro Kirk. Heineman will now likely remain with the team for the remainder of the regular season.
Jansen has been a productive hitter for the Blue Jays this year, coming through with some of the team's most significant hits.
The Blue Jays did get some good injury news on Friday, as star shortstop Bo Bichette was reinstated from the injured list and will be active for Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals.
Injured reliever Erik Swanson will pitch in a triple-A game on Saturday and there is hope that he will just need one rehab game before returning to the team.
