Hitting coach Guillermo Martinez will return to the Toronto Blue Jays, general manager Ross Atkins said Tuesday, but bench coach Don Mattingly will take on a larger role as offensive coordinator.
The fate of Martinez was up in the air after the Blue Jays bats struggled to generate offence this season. That peaked in the playoffs against the Twins when the Blue Jays only scored one run in a quick two-game sweep.
In 2022, the Blue Jays ranked fourth in MLB with 775 runs scored. That dropped to 746 runs in 2023, which tied for 14th.
Mattingly's role as offensive coordinator is contingent on him remaining with the organization. The long-time Yankees star is a candidate for the managerial position in Milwaukee.
Martinez, 39, has been the Blue Jays hitting coach since 2018 and was initially hired in 2012 to coach in the minor leagues. As a player, he was a shortstop in the Marlins' minor-league system.
In other Blue Jays news Tuesday, the club has hired Carlos Febles to be the new third base coach, replacing the retiring Luis Rivera. Febles had been the third base coach with the Boston Red Sox.
