Toronto Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman lasted just 1.1 innings during his start Saturday night against the New York Yankees.
The 33-year-old right-hander allowed six runs — five earned — four hits, two walks and two home runs before being relieved by Mitch White in the second inning. Gausman tossed 51 pitches, 29 of them for strikes, and was throwing notably softer than usual.
His fastball averaged 91.4 m.p.h. and his splitter sat 86.3.
Gausman's night got off to a rocky start, allowing two first-inning homers to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, giving New York a 3-0 lead.
The second didn't go much better as Anthony Volpe reached on a controversial catcher interference call, later scoring on a sacrifice fly. Austin Wells then scored on a passed ball and Juan Soto drove in Oswaldo Cabrera with an RBI single.
White forced Anthony Rizzo to line into a double play to end the second inning.
After a delayed start to spring training, Gausman recovered from a shoulder issue to make his 2024 season debut in Toronto's opening series against the Tampa Bay Rays. In that start, he pitched 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out six.
His fastball averaged 95.9 in that game.
