Blue Jays' Lourdes Gurriel Jr. returning to lineup vs. Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., left, heads to the dugout with a trainer and a towell-wrapped hand after he was injured fielding a double by Minnesota Twins' Mitch Garver in the fifth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, in Minneapolis (Jim Mone/AP).

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is returning to the Toronto Blue Jays lineup ahead of their biggest series of the season against the New York Yankees.

The left fielder suffered a right hand injury during the first game of the Minnesota Twins series on Sept. 24, where Randal Grichuk inadvertently stepped on it. Gurriel Jr. required stitches in his right middle finger and missed the remaining three games against the Twins.

The 27-year-old will be the designated hitter on Tuesday night against the Yankees, batting sixth in the lineup.

Gurriel Jr. is having an incredible September for the Blue Jays. Prior to the injury, he recorded a batting average of .364 in September, along with 30 RBIs, tying Kelly Gruber for the most in the month in franchise history.

The Blue Jays open their three-game series against the Yankees on Tuesday night at 7:07 pm ET/4:07 pm PT on Sportsnet and SN Now.
