Blue Jays' Manoah still in Toronto, date of next start unknown

Alek Manoah has yet to make a start for triple-A Buffalo, eight days after he was optioned there by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Saturday that Manoah remains in Toronto and the date for his next start has not been determined.

Manoah was optioned down to the minors for the second time this season on Aug. 11 and told to focus on refining his pitch delivery. His last start saw him allow four earned runs across four innings against the Cleveland Guardians.

Manoah was a finalist for the American League Cy Young award last year, but has struggled this season with a 3-9 record, 5.87 ERA and uncharacteristic 59 walks. He was optioned to the Florida Complex League on June 6 and made one start at that level plus one start at double-A before re-joining the Blue Jays in early July.

Schneider said that the strategy with Manoah is similar to his earlier stint in the FCL where he worked through his pitches separately at the team's spring training complex in Dunedin, Fla., before making a start.

Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports that Manoah is still in line to pitch for the Blue Jays in the event of an injury in the rotation.
