Alek Manoah's slow climb back to the majors continued Thursday when the recently optioned starter threw 75 pitches over five innings in a simulated game, according to Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
This is the second simulated game that Manoah has thrown since arriving at the club's Player Development Complex in Dunedin, Fla.
“We were pleased with it," Schneider said of Manoah's Thursday outing. "Everything we were talking about in terms of delivery and stuff was good. He’s making some good strides.”
Manoah, 25, had struggled to find his form to begin the 2023 season, posting a 6.36 ERA in 13 starts after finishing third in Cy Young voting a year ago. He was optioned to the Florida Complex League on June 6.
As far as the next steps for the big right-hander? At least one more simulated game before they consider getting him into a live game.
In other Blue Jays pitching news, Zach Pop is scheduled to throw in a rehab game in low-A Dunedin on Saturday. Hyun Jin Ryu threw one inning of live batting practice and felt good, while Chad Green is expected to throw a bullpen session Saturday.
The Blue Jays kick off a series with the Texas Rangers Friday that you can watch live on Sportsnet and SN NOW starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
