Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.
Chapman hit .464 with five doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI while recording a hit in all seven of Toronto's games last week. Among qualified hitters, he is the league leader in batting average, hits and doubles to open the 2023 season.
The 29-year-old also led all AL hitters in RBI and total bases in games against the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels last week.
The three-time gold glove award winner punctuated his week by going 3-for-5 with his first career grand slam in the Blue Jays' wild 12-11 victory over the Angels on Sunday.
Toronto went 5-2 last week, earning series victories over both Kansas City and Los Angeles.
An all-star in 2019, Chapman is off to a torrid start holding a .475/.523/.800 slash line and 272 wRC+ while leading all of MLB in hard-hit balls (95 m.p.h or higher).

Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates won the award in the National League. Across his five games last week, the outfielder had four home runs and 12 RBI while carrying a batting average of .480.
He helped his team to series wins over the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox, giving the Pirates a 6-3 record so far this season.
