Blue Jays option IF Leo Jimenez, OF Joey Loperfido to triple-A

The Toronto Blue Jays are beginning to trim down their roster as they prepare for the regular season.

Infielder Leo Gimenez and outfielder Joey Loperfido have been optioned to triple-A Buffalo, and more moves are expected to be made as they get down to a 26-man squad for Opening Day, the team announced Friday.

Both players spent extended periods in the bigs last season, with Jimenez playing 63 games with the Blue Jays and Loperfido playing 81 games, split between Toronto and the Houston Astros.

Jimenez, 23, tabled a .229/.329/.358 batting splits last season with four home runs. It was his first stint in the majors.

Over 14 spring training games, the Panama infielder put up .192/.264/.269 splits.

Loperfido, meanwhile, struggled after being traded to the Blue Jays mid-season. He had .197/.236/.343 splits with two home runs over 43 games with the Jays.

The 26-year-old is putting up .179/.281/.357 batting splits in spring training.

The Blue Jays open their season on March 27 against the Baltimore Orioles.
