The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned catcher Reese McGuire to the taxi squad and selected the contract of catcher Caleb Joseph.
To make room for Joseph on the 40-man roster, closer Ken Giles has been moved to the 45-day injured list.
McGuire has struggled both at the plate and in the field in his second full season as the Blue Jays’ backup catcher. In 18 games, including 12 starts, McGuire is slashing .073/.073/.146 with only three hits in 45 plate appearances. Additionally, he has only caught half the runners that have tried to steal off him (4-8), while committing three errors and two passed balls.
Joseph attended Blue Jays camp on a minor-league contract and has spent the entire campaign on the taxi squad. The 34-year-old was a member of the Baltimore Orioles for five seasons and was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019.
Giles injured his forearm in the opening series of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays in late July and remains on track to return to the lineup in mid-September. He threw a simulated game on Saturday and will throw one more on Tuesday before a decision is made on when he will be activated, manager Charlie Montoyo said. The earliest he can be activated from the injured list is Sept. 10.
