TORONTO — Brandon Barriera, the Toronto Blue Jays’ first-round pick in 2022, underwent a hybrid ligament-replacement and internal-brace surgery on his left elbow Monday morning, a procedure that typically comes with a 12 to 18 month recovery period.
The 20-year-old’s representative, Nate Heisler, posted the news to X, which comes roughly three weeks after Barriera left the mound 23 pitches into his season-opening outing with low-A Dunedin.
Dr. Keith Meister performed the hybrid surgery, which may give the left-hander, selected 23rd overall, a chance to pitch at some point next season, Heisler of Klutch Sports added later via text message.
Barriera threw just 20.1 innings across seven outings in the Florida Complex League and Dunedin last season due to elbow and biceps issues.
