The Toronto Blue Jays announced Friday they have placed outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday, due to a left hamstring strain.
Gurriel left Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles during the second inning with discomfort after running hard to beat out a double play.
Manager John Schneider said Gurriel might need more than 10 days to return.
The 28-year-old from Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, has five homers and 52 RBI this season with a .291/.343/.400 slash line.
Toronto also recalled infielder Otto Lopez from triple-A Buffalo.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays still have not announced a starting pitcher for Sunday's series finale against the Texas Rangers.
Schneider said a bullpen game is the goal if things play out well in the first two games on Friday and Saturday
