Amid a rash of injuries to some of the Toronto Blue Jays' top pitching prospects, the team provided updates on a trio of arms Monday afternoon.
Blue Jays No. 1 prospect Ricky Tiedemann will visit team doctors in Toronto this week after he was placed on the seven-day injured list on Thursday. The 21-year-old southpaw underwent an MRI on his pitching elbow that led to his placement on the IL.
Next steps for Tiedemann will be determined after his visit to Toronto.
Tiedemann had appeared in three games this season with triple-A Buffalo, posting a 5.63 ERA and 10 strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Meanwhile, 2022 first-round pick Brandon Barriera is slated to see Dr. Keith Meister this week to evaluate his injured elbow. The Blue Jays' No. 4 prospect left his first start of the 2024 season for the low-A Dunedin Blue Jays on April 6 in the second inning.
The 20-year-old lefty was through 1.1 innings and had allowed two hits and one run. He was later charged with a second run after a baserunner he allowed came in to score.
The Blue Jays selected Barriera 23rd overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, and he pitched just 20.1 innings while making his professional debut in 2023 as injuries kept him sidelined for a large portion of the season.
Dr. Meister is an orthopedic surgeon in Texas who is well known for his work with pitchers who need Tommy John surgery.
The final update came on right-hander Landen Maroudis, who the Blue Jays picked in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. The 19-year-old left his start for low-A Dunedin on Sunday in the second inning.
He is slated to undergo an MRI on his forearm.
Maroudis entered the year as Toronto's No. 12 prospect. He had been excellent in his first three outings, allowing just one run and three hits over 10.2 innings, striking out 12.
