The Toronto Blue Jays are down another pitcher.
Jameson Taillon was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, the team announced Saturday.
Left-hander Ricky Tiedemann was recalled from triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move and will be active for Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals (7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, Sportsnet and Sportsnet+).
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Saturday that the team is getting more opinions on Taillon's MRI before officially closing the door on a return this season. Schneider explained that it's probably safe to say that Taillon is out for the remainder of 2026, “but hopefully not,” the manager added.
Taillon was pulled two innings into his first game back from the injured list, throwing only 29 pitches against the Royals on Friday.
The 34-year-old looked to be strained after a few pitches in the second inning, and though he completed the frame, he was replaced by reliever Joe Mantiply in the bottom of the third.
Schneider said Taillon reported that the discomfort in his elbow is different this time than last time.
Taillon was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's showdown, having been sidelined since Aug. 11 with right forearm tendinitis.
He finished his outing with one earned run — a homer from Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. — on two hits with one strikeout.
Acquired from the Chicago Cubs ahead of this year's trade deadline, Taillon had made two starts for the Blue Jays before suffering the initial injury. In those two outings, the Canadian-American dual-citizen posted a 3.38 ERA with seven strikeouts and five walks in eight innings.
Before the trade, he recorded a 5.92 ERA over 15 starts before being designated for assignment by the Cubs.
Taillon has a history of elbow problems, having undergone Tommy John surgery twice over his 10-year career — once in 2014 as a prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system and again in 2019.
Tiedemann was optioned to make room for Taillon to be activated for his start on Friday and was able to be brought back since he's covering an injured player. The 24-year-old has bounced between triple-A and MLB this season, appearing out of the bullpen at the top level for the Blue Jays.
His last appearance came on Sept. 1 against the Cleveland Guardians, pitching one shutout inning of relief in a 6-1 loss.
As for a couple of other injured Blue Jays pitchers, Patrick Corbin (shoulder) returning this season is described as a "long shot," while Cody Ponce would only be an option if the Blue Jays advanced deep into October.
Corbin hasn't pitched since July 21, while Ponce suffered a torn ACL in his first start of the season at the end of March.
The Blue Jays (71-71) are a game back of the final wild-card spot in the American League.
