The Toronto Blue Jays recalled Mitch White as the 29th man for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays.

White took over for opener Julian Merryweather in the second inning of the first game. He pitched six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.

White was optioned to triple-A Buffalo last week after a shaky start against the Baltimore Orioles.

White, acquired in a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline, has given up a combined 19 earned runs in his past three starts.

The Blue Jays are in a stretch of 11 games in 10 days and have very little starting pitching depth. Toronto already had a bullpen game on Sunday and could face a similar situation for Friday's series opener against Baltimore.

The Rays have called up right-hander Yonny Chirinos from triple-A Durham as their 29th man and he seems likely to start the second game of the doubleheader, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Chirinos has pitched three innings with Tampa this season while spending most of his time at various levels of the minor leagues.

Toronto's Alek Manoah was scratched from his start in Game 1 after he dealt with a stomach bug.

The Blue Jays are hoping Manoah will be available for Game 2.

The Blue Jays are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the top wild-card spot, a half game in front of Tampa.
