Blue Jays RHP Merryweather DFA after team officially signs 1B Belt

The Toronto Blue Jays cleared roster space for first baseman Brandon Belt by designating right-hander Julian Merryweather for assignment on Tuesday.

Toronto signed the left-handed hitting Belt, a former San Francisco Giant, to a one-year, $9.3-million deal.

Merryweather has battled injuries throughout his time in Toronto. He was the player to be named later in the deal sending Josh Donaldson to Cleveland in 2018.

Merryweather made his major-league debut in August 2020.

In 2021, he suffered an oblique strain in May and didn't return until September.

Last year, Merryweather missed more than two months with an abdominal strain. He finished 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 26 appearances.
