Two key Toronto Blue Jays relievers are close to making what hopefully will be the final step in their rehab progressions.
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins said Monday that Jordan Romano (elbow inflammation) and Erik Swanson (forearm tightness) are expected to pitch soon for triple-A Buffalo.
Atkins added the two players are feeling "no pain" and recovering "exceptionally well."
The Bisons are in Buffalo for six games in a row against Rochester, starting Tuesday.
Swanson, sidelined by right shoulder inflammation, struck out two during a 1-2-3 inning for low-A Dunedin on Sunday. The righty threw 10 of 11 pitches for strikes.
The 30-year-old Romano, a native of Markham, Ont., tied a career-high with 36 saves in 2023. He had a 2.90 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 59 appearances.
In 2023, Swanson was one of Toronto’s most reliable relievers, posting a 2.97 ERA and striking out 75 hitters over 66.2 innings of work.
Meanwhile, catcher Danny Jansen (wrist) took batting practice in Toronto before the home opener on Monday.
First baseman/DH Joey Votto (ankle) has been hitting off a tee in Dunedin, Fla.
The team has not announced next steps for the two position players.
