With opening day just over two weeks away, several key members of the Toronto Blue Jays still are trying to get up to speed.
The club provided an update on some important players on Tuesday in Dunedin, Fla.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The slugger remains day-to-day with a left knee contusion. He is scheduled to go through a full workout Tuesday at the player development complex.
The club says Guerrero hasn't been sent for an MRI and manager John Schneider added: "There's nothing new with him — just being cautious right now."
Joey Votto
Signed to a minor-league deal last week, the 40-year-old is scheduled to hit against Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez during a live batting practice on Tuesday.
Speaking of Rodriguez (back), the hope is he throws around 40 pitches in the batting practice. That would set him up to play his first game next.
The Toronto-born Votto, meanwhile, could play in a minor-league game as soon as Wednesday.
Kevin Gausman
The ace right-hander (shoulder fatigue) will throw a side session on Tuesday before the club determines next steps. A live batting practice or a game are the likely options if things go well.
Alek Manoah
The right-hander (should soreness) continues to play catch. There is no timetable for his return.
