Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu put together his longest rehab start with the Buffalo Bisons against the Syracuse Mets on Friday night.
The 36-year-old southpaw enjoyed 6.0 innings of two-run work. Ryu reached 85 pitches — 58 of them strikes — and saw his fastball top out at a season-best 90.8 m.p.h. He only allowed three total hits and added five strikeouts and one walk to his line in the game.
His changeup was dominant in the outing. He threw it 23 times and generated seven whiffs on 15 swings with the pitch.
Ryu threw 4.0 scoreless innings before giving up solo shots to Jonathan Araúz and José Peraza in the fifth inning.
Buffalo took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh and held on to give Ryu his second win with the team.
An All-Star in 2019, Ryu underwent Tommy John surgery last June and has now made four rehab starts, with two of them coming for the Bisons.
Once a player starts a rehab assignment, they have 30 days before they need to be added to the major league roster. Since Ryu's first minor league start came on July 4, his 30-day clock would end on Aug. 3.
The nine-year MLB veteran is in the final season of a four-year, $80 million deal signed on Dec. 27, 2019. Over three seasons with the Blue Jays, Ryu has pitched to a 4.07 ERA over 263.0 innings with a 21-12 record. He finished third in Cy Young voting following the 2020 campaign.
