Blue Jays' Ryu suffers elbow tightness in win against Angels

The decision to remove Hyun Jin Ryu in the fifth inning of Thursday's win over the Los Angeles Angels was not due to performance, according to manager Charlie Montoyo.

The Toronto Blue Jays starter was dealing with tightness in his left elbow after throwing 65 pitches in the game, Montoyo said. Ryu allowed two runs on six hits while recording a single strikeout as the Blue Jays took the series opener 6-3.

Montoyo did say that he does not expect Ryu to miss his next start as the tightness he was dealing with was not a major issue.

The 35-year-old missed time this season after getting placed on the injured list with a forearm injury. He is 2-0 through five starts with 5.48 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 23 innings.
