  • Blue Jays' Springer 'not ready yet' as recovery from quad injury continues

George Springer is not in the Toronto Blue Jays‘ starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals as he continues to recover from a quad strain.

Springer took batting practice and ran the bases on Tuesday, but Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters before the game that the centre fielder is “not ready yet.”

“He feels great except the running,” Montoyo said.

The biggest free-agent acquisition in franchise history has yet to play this campaign due to the quad strain and an oblique issue picked up in spring training.

On Sunday, after Springer spent the weekend playing games at the club’s alternate site, manager Charlie Montoyo said he was optimistic the 31-year-old would be healthy enough to play Tuesday. However, Springer was not in the starting lineup the team announced on social media just before 4 p.m. ET.

The Blue Jays host the Nationals again on Wednesday, are off on Thursday and then open a three-game series at home against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Toronto gets its two-game series against Max Scherzer and the Nationals underway on Sportsnet beginning at 7:07 p.m. ET/ 4:07 p.m. PT.
