Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the New York Yankees after fouling the ball off a knee in the series opener.
The four-time all-star has battled a lingering elbow injury and just returned from the injured list on Monday. He was the designated hitter in three games since his return and pinch-hit in the other game.
Springer had his first five-hit game as a Blue Jay in Thursday's 9-2 win over the Yankees in the Bronx.
With Springer out, Alejandro Kirk will be the designated hitter and Danny Janssen will catch on Friday. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will hit in the lead-off position.
Meanwhile, interim manager John Schneider announced before the game that left-handed reliever Tim Mayza (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at triple-A Buffalo on Saturday.
