Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer will not be in the starting lineup for the third game in a row on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays because of a lingering elbow injury.
Springer was pulled from last Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers with discomfort in his right elbow in the eighth inning. Interim manager John Schneider said Springer was "feeling good" afterwards.
On Tuesday, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the team was "not overly concerned" with Springer's status.
"We just want to make sure he's not pushing too hard and he's honest with himself," Atkins said. "George is an exceptionally driven individual and has a very high pain tolerance. Just making sure we're not pushing too hard and he's not pushing too hard. We're not overly concerned and very confident we'll be able to manage it."
Raimel Tapia will play centre field and Loudes Gurriel Jr. will bat leadoff in Springer's absence on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old Springer has missed time this season while dealing with elbow soreness — described by Schneider as “inflammation” for at least several weeks. The ailment kept the outfielder from participating in the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.
Springer is slashing .251/330/.467 with 18 home runs and 47 RBIs in 87 games.
