Blue Jays tie Pirates in spring-training home opener

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Six Toronto pitchers combined to give up three hits in a seven-inning pre-season game as the Blue Jays tied the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-2 on Monday.

Starter Robbie Ray gave up one run on one hit in two innings before Nate Pearson, Francisco Liriano, David Phelps, Ryan Borucki and Jordan Romano of Markham, Ont., each pitched an inning of relief.

It marked Toronto’s first exhibition game at their spring and early-season home of Dunedin, Fla., after the Blue Jays (1-0-1) beat the New York Yankees 6-4 on Sunday in their pre-season debut in Tampa, Fla.

Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly and Breyvic Valera’s single in the first off Pirates starter Mitch Keller accounted for Toronto’s scoring.

Pirates outfielder and former Blue Jay Anthony Alford homered off Ray in the second before Phillip Evans’ single off Pearson in the third tied it.

The Blue Jays also had just three hits on the day.

Toronto hosts the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
