Blue Jays top prospect Sean Keys to take reps in left field

One of the Toronto Blue Jays' top prospects is looking to add another position to his arsenal in the hopes of accelerating a return to the major leagues.

Infielder Sean Keys will take reps in left field at triple-A Buffalo this week, manager John Schneider said in Toronto on Wednesday.

Keys, who is the Blue Jays' No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has been swinging a hot bat at triple-A, hitting .293/.414/.611 with 13 home runs while playing first and third base. His production has picked up in August, with a .375/.475/.679 slash line and six home runs in 21 games

The 23-year-old appeared in 12 games for the Blue Jays in late June and early July, hitting one home run and five RBIs. He primarily played first base during that stint, but some experience in left field would give him a clearer path back to the majors as the Blue Jays have been rotating players through that spot all season.

Most recently, Daz Cameron and Jesus Sanchez have split time in left, with Sanchez making headlines last week after multiple errors in a loss to the Rays.

"You wish he played, I don't know, second base or outfield," said Schneider of Keys. "It's weird how we're built right now, but he's definitely making a strong case to come back."
