Mike Soroka, one of the top Canadians pitching in MLB today, will miss the remainder of the season as he continues to battle back from an Achilles injury suffered last August.
Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed the news Friday in an appearance on MLB Network, saying Soroka “is down for the year and hopefully we’ll get him back next year.”
Soroka, 23, was the Braves’ Opening Day starter last season but injured his Achilles tendon in his third start on Aug. 3. While he was able to make one spring training appearance earlier this year, the Braves announced on May 12 that the right-hander had suffered a setback and would need to undergo another procedure on the injured tendon.
“I hate it for the kid,” Snitker said when announcing the second surgery. “He’s worked so hard to come back. I hate it for him personally to have this setback.”
Soroka took MLB by storm in 2019, finishing second in NL Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in NL Cy Young voting while also being named to the All-Star Game. He finished that season – his only full campaign at the major-league level – with a 13-4 record, 2.68 ERA and 142 strikeouts.
