The Los Angeles Dodgers got a major scare on the night they clinched the NL West but Freddie Freeman appears to have avoided a major injury.
The star first baseman twisted his ankle while trying to avoid a tag on the bases on Thursday's game against the Padres. Freeman's right leg twisted awkwardly on the play and he was down on the field for a couple of minutes before he was able to walk slowly back to the dugout.
The Dodgers (95-64) won the game 7-2 to secure the NL West title. In the celebration after the win, cameras caught Freeman on crutches and with a walking boot.
Team president Andrew Friedman told local reporters that Freeman will not play this weekend against the Rockies but could be available for the NLDS, which begins on Oct. 5.
Freeman said he has a sprained ankle but will be doing everything he can to be ready for the playoffs.
