Former Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ announced he is retiring from Major League Baseball after 15 seasons.
The 39-year-old, a free agent going into 2022, announced the news with Jessica Lindberg on her show, the Heart Strong Podcast.
"I think I’m still processing it, but I do wake up feeling good about it, and I’m happy to start the process of being a full-time dad, for the time being, at the very least,” Happ told Lindberg on the podcast.
Making his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2007, Happ appeared in six seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, first from 2012-14 and once more from 2016-18. Happ was also named to the All-Star team in 2018.
His latest stint came with the St. Louis Cardinals where he had a 5-2 record with an ERA of 4.00.
In 328 career starts, Happ posted a 133-100 record with a 4.13 ERA in over 1893.2 innings, playing for the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Phillies, New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Seattle Mariners.
