Triple-A second baseman Davis Schneider is travelling to Boston to meet the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of a weekend series with the Red Sox, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.
Schneider cannot officially be activated for a major league game until he is added to the 40-man roster.
Johnny Giunta of the Gate 14 Podcast was first to report that Schneider was meeting the Jays.
Schneider, 24, is slashing .275/.416/.553 with 21 home runs and 64 RBIs with the Buffalo Bisons this season. He is the Blue Jays' 28th-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
The five-foot-nine second baseman was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Eastern High School.
If activated to the MLB roster, Schneider will join a Blue Jays team that's struggling offensively as of late. The Blue Jays are coming off a seven-game homestand against the Angels and Orioles in which they scored just 22 runs and finished with a 3-4 record.
The series with the Red Sox could have large ramifications on the American League wild-card race. The Blue Jays enter play Friday in the third wild-card spot with a 60-50 record, just two games ahead of the 57-51 Red Sox.
