Chicago Cubs starter Marcus Stroman celebrated the start of Pride Month by announcing he would be making donations to charities empowering the LGTBQIA+ community in each of the three cities he has played in.
"My career has afforded me the ability to support causes that are near and dear to me and those around me," Stroman wrote in a statement. "It is my hope that my contribution will further the ongoing efforts of the LQTBQIA+ community in raising awareness, combating discrimination, and helping to celebrate diversity and inclusion."
The three charities Stroman is donating to are Brave Space Alliance in Chicago, Hetrick-Martin Institute in New York and The 519 in Toronto.
Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ Center located on the South Side of Chicago. The organization says on its website that it strives "to empower, embolden, and educate each other through mutual aid, knowledge-sharing, and the creation of community-sourced resources as we build toward the liberation of all oppressed peoples."
Founded in 1979, the Hetrick-Martin Institue provides free mental health and wellness services and programming in 38 states across the U.S. "We are developing a dynamic network of service providers in other youth serving organizations and advocating for an expanded view of care interventions with funders," the organization says on its website.
Founded in 1976, The 519 provides meals and other services to the most vulnerable members of the 2SLGBTQ+ in Toronto and surrounding areas. "We strive to make a real difference in people’s lives, while working to promote inclusion, understanding and respect," the organization says on its website.
