After dominating the first round of All-Star Game balloting, Toronto Blue Jays finalists will not be starting the 2023 Midsummer Classic in Seattle after Phase 2 of voting closed Thursday afternoon.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Whit Merrifield, Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman and Kevin Kiermaier were all voted onto the head-to-head portion of the All-Star fan vote, but now will have to wait for a combination of player ballot selections and choices made by the Commissioner's Office, to see if they will be representing the American League on July 11.
All pitchers and position player reserves will be announced on July 2.
Texas Rangers infielders Marcus Semien (2B), Corey Seager (SS) and Josh Jung (3B) beat out their Blue Jay counterparts at their respective positions, while Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz earned more votes than Guerrero Jr.
In the outfield, Kiermaier was outvoted by Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, Rays’ Randy Arozarena and reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees.
