Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson was unanimously named the 2023 American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year on Monday night.
The award was voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) and revealed on MLB Network.
Henderson was a key member of the Orioles' run to 101 wins and the AL East title. The 22-year-old hit 28 home runs while slashing .255/.325/.489 over 150 games.
He led all AL rookies in homers, RBI (82), extra-base hits (65) and runs scored (99).
The six-foot-two infielder received all 30 first-place votes to become the 13th player to win the award unanimously.
Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas and Cleveland Guardians pitch Tanner Bibee were the other two finalists for the award.
Bibee finished second, receiving 20 second-place votes and seven third-place votes.
Minnesota Twins and Canadian infielder Edouard Julien finished seventh after receiving two third-place votes.
Henderson was named the AL Silver Slugger award winner at the utility position. The 22-year-old played 84 games at third base and 83 at short.
He becomes the sixth Oriole to win Rookie of the Year, joining Gregg Olson (1989), Cal Ripken Jr. (1982), Eddie Murray (1977), Al Bumbry (1973), Curt Blefary (1965) and Ron Hansen (1960).
A second-round pick from John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, Ala. in 2019, Henderson debuted with Baltimore in 2022, playing in 34 games while slashing .259/.348/.440.
Monday was the first of four straight days of MLB BBWAA awards announcements. The Manager of the Year will be awarded on Tuesday, followed by the Cy Young on Wednesday and the MVP on Thursday.
