San Diego Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr., whose electric offensive ability has made him one of the most captivating young players in all of baseball, has been selected as the cover athlete for MLB The Show 21, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Monday.
At 22 years old, Tatis Jr. is now the youngest player ever chosen for the cover since the game’s debut in 2006 and the first member of the Padres to ever do so.
Tatis Jr., a native of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, hit 17 home runs last season — second-most in the National League — and claimed All-MLB First Team honours, his first career Silver Slugger Award and a fourth-place finish in NL MVP voting.
But his performances extended far beyond counting stats and awards. With the Padres’ season on the line in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series, Tatis Jr. delivered one of the post-season’s most iconic moments, cementing San Diego’s comeback with a two-run shot and celebrating it with a bat flip.
Appearing on the 16th edition of MLB The Show, Tatis Jr. will be adding his name to a list of cover stars that features Miguel Cabrera, Josh Donaldson, Ken Griffey, Jr., Bryce Harper and many more.
MLB The Show 21, which launces in April, is the first edition of the game available to players on both Playstation and Xbox consoles.
