The Tampa Bay Rays can't seem to catch a break when it comes to the health of their ace.
Lefty Shane McClanahan pulled himself out of a start against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday after appearing to suffer an arm injury after throwing a pitch.
In an interview with the Rays' radio broadcast during the game, manager Kevin Cash said that McClanahan's injury was in the triceps area and that he's set to undergo imaging on Sunday.
The injury occurred in the top of the third inning with the Rays up 5-0. McClanahan threw a pitch to Red Sox lead-off hitter Kristian Campbell and immediately gestured toward his team's dugout, appearing to be in some discomfort.
He left the game with the team's head trainer Joe Benge. He had thrown 41 pitches up to that point with one hit and three strikeouts.
McClanahan missed the entirety of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He had a 3.29 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 115.0 innings in the 2023 season before undergoing the surgical procedure in August of that year.
The 27-year-old was poised to return to the mound full-time this season. Going into Saturday's start, he had pitched 4.2 innings without giving up a run in spring training, adding five strikeouts along the way.
A two-time All-Star, McClanahan has a career 3.02 ERA with a 33-16 record and 1.105 WHIP over three seasons.
