The Toronto Blue Jays acquired some much-needed bullpen help in a trade with the Miami Marlins Monday but are still in the market one month out from the MLB trade deadline.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Blue Jays “are among teams looking at Pirates closer Richard Rodriguez” and that the market for Rodriguez is “heating up.”
The 27-year-old Rodriguez could be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the trade market this summer both for his play on the field and the contract control he brings. Rodriguez has a 1.78 ERA with 10 saves and 27 strikeouts in 29 appearances this season, his first season as Pittsburgh’s closer. He has two more years of arbitration eligibility on his contract after this season.
The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Adam Cimber in a multi-player trade with the Marlins Monday as the club deals with a number of short and long-term injuries in the bullpen. The Blue Jays enter play Wednesday third in the AL East with a 41-36 record, 6.5 games out of first place and four games back in the wild card race.
