The Toronto Blue Jays traded reliever Trent Thornton to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielder Mason McCoy, the team announced Wednesday.
McCoy was with the Tacoma Rainiers, the Mariners' triple-A affiliate, and will report to triple-A Buffalo.
Thornton was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week after they acquired reliever Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 29-year-old right-hander had a 1.69 ERA in 5.1 innings pitched for the Blue Jays this season. Thornton appeared in 108 games over five seasons in the majors with Toronto and has a 4.77 career ERA.
McCoy, 28, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
In 87 games with the Rainiers this season, McCoy is slashing .234/.330/.407 with 55 RBIs and 11 home runs. He has yet to make his debut in the majors.
