The St. Louis Cardinals are in discussions with the Colorado Rockies about a potential deal involving third baseman Nolan Arenado, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
However, no deal appears close and it’s unknown which other players might be involved in a trade.
“League sources offered varied assessments of where the talks stood Thursday night,” Rosenthal wrote, adding the Atlanta Braves have also asked the Rockies about Arenado. “One cautioned that a trade might not happen at all, but others believe the Rockies are motivated to move Arenado and the Cardinals are motivated to acquire him.”
Arenado, a five-time All-Star, batted .253/.303/.434 with eight home runs and 26 RBI in 46 games with the Rockies last season, his worst offensive season since he broke into the league in 2013.
The 29-year-old is signed through 2026 after inking an eight-year, $260-million contract prior to the 2019 season. The deal also contains a full no-trade clause, but Rosenthal reports that Arenado “likely would waive” the clause to join the Cardinals.
