The St. Louis Cardinals are signing veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford, The Athletic's Katie Woo reported Monday.
The deal is pending a physical.
Crawford, 37, had previously spent all 13 seasons of his MLB career in San Francisco, playing in 1,655 games, slashing .250/.319/.396 with 146 home runs, 744 RBIs and accruing 31.1 WAR, per FanGraphs.
Originally a fourth-round pick out of UCLA in 2008, Crawford emerged as one of the top middle-infield defenders in baseball during his time in the Bay Area. Since his debut in 2011, he ranks fourth among shortstops in defensive runs saved.
A three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Crawford struggled in 2023, hitting .194 with a .587 over 93 games.
He is expected to serve as St. Louis's backup shortstop, with rookie Masyn Winn as the starter, according to Woo.
Tommy Edman primarily handled the duties at short once the Cardinals traded Paul DeJong, but his status is questionable for opening day after undergoing off-season wrist surgery.
