The Chicago Cubs and middle infielder Nico Hoerner reached an agreement on a three-year, $35 million extension Monday night, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The deal buys out two years of arbitration and the first year that Hoerner would have been eligible to enter free agency.
The 25-year-old is coming off a career-best season that saw him total 4.0 fWAR, while batting .281 with 10 home runs.
The former first-round pick has struggled this spring, hitting just .250, with four extra-base hits in 48 at-bats.
After spending 2022 as Chicago's shortstop, Hoerner is moving to second base in 2023 to make way for prized off-season signing, Dansby Swanson.
Hoerner and the Cubs will look to improve upon their 74-88 record in 2023, starting with Opening Day on Thursday when that host the Milwaukee Brewers.
