Report: Cubs invite two former Blue Jays to spring training

A couple of former Toronto Blue Jays will be joining the Chicago Cubs down south.

The Cubs invited reliever Trevor Richards and catcher Reese McGuire to spring training after signing both to minor league deals on Tuesday, per WSCR-AM's Bruce Levine.

Richards pitched with the Blue Jays from 2021-24 before the team traded him to the Minnesota Twins last season. He finished with a 4.64 ERA over 52.1 innings for the Blue Jays last season.

McGuire, 29, last played for the Blue Jays in 2021 and spent the past two seasons with the Boston Red Sox. In 2024, he appeared in 53 games for Boston and slashed .209/.280/.295.

The Blue Jays traded McGuire to the Chicago White Sox ahead of the 2022 season.

Richards and McGuire will report to spring training on Feb. 9 with the rest of the Cubs' pitchers and catchers.
