Superstar outfielder Juan Soto could be close to choosing which team he will sign with.
The highly coveted free agent is expected to make a decision before MLB's winter meetings get underway Monday in Dallas, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Passan said Thursday that the Mets have been "near the top the whole time" while also citing the incumbent New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers as teams still in the race.
"The expectation is that there will be meetings over the weekend and it's that point Juan Soto will decide where he's going to go," Passan said. "We will know at latest by the time the winter meetings in Dallas start."
A four-time All-Star, Soto finished third in American League MVP voting this year with a .288/.419/.569 slash line, 41 home runs and 109 RBIs for the Yankees.
The 26-year-old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, holds a .285 career batting average, 201 homers and 592 RBIs.
Soto rejected a 15-year, $440 million deal from the Washington Nationals in 2022, leading to the team trading him to the San Diego Padres. He was then dealt to the Yankees last year.
