The Seattle Mariners continue to make moves ahead of Tuesday's deadline but this time they are shipping a player out.
The Mariners traded veteran relief pitcher Ryne Stanek to the New York Mets in exchange for minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas, MLB insider Jon Heyman reports.
Stanek, 32, joined the Mariners as a free agent ahead of the 2024 season and has posted a 4.38 ERA with 44 strikeouts through 39 innings pitched. He previously suited up for the Houston Astros for three years, posting a 2.90 ERA across 186 appearances.
With the addition of reliever Yimi Garcia in a trade with Toronto, the Mariners rid themselves of another bullpen arm in favour of fielding depth. Thomas spent the latter part of the 2024 campaign with the Mets' triple-A club in Syracuse where the 24-year-old recorded a .235 batting average with five home runs and 18 RBI over 49 games.
This is the third trade made by the Mariners in the past 24 hours. In addition to Garcia, the offence-starved Mariners acquired outfielder Randy Arozarena in a trade with the Rays on Thursday.
