Marlins trade Josh Bell to Diamondbacks for cash considerations

Josh Bell is on the move ahead of yet another trade deadline.

The Miami Marlins have traded their switch-hitting first baseman to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later, the teams announced Tuesday.

Bell was placed on waivers earlier this month.

According to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, Arizona will pay $2.25 million of Bell's remaining salary.

This marks the third straight season that the 31-year-old has been dealt ahead of an MLB trade deadline, with him being traded from the Washington Nationals to the San Diego Padres in 2022 and then from the Cleveland Guardians to Miami in 2023.

Bell picked up his $16.5 million player option before the start of the 2024 campaign, making him a free agent heading into this upcoming off-season.

Bell has seen ups and downs through 2024 as he began the year hitting .167 in April but flipped a switch in May converting on .311 of his at-bats. Now in July, his plate conversions have settled down at .239 — falling under his career .258 average. Through 104 games, he’s connected on 14 home runs and knocked in 49 runners.

The nine-year vet began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, suiting up for them full-time from 2016 through 2020. There, he was named an All-Star in 2019 after raking in 37 home runs and 116 RBI.

He was later traded to Washington before the start of the 2021 season and notched a Silver Slugger Award with the Nationals for his efforts in 2022.

Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker left Monday's game with left oblique tightness, perhaps pushing Arizona to make a move after placing the 33-year-old on the injured list.
