Former New York Yankees captain and one-time American League MVP Don Mattingly is reportedly in talks to join the Blue Jays' coaching staff, according to the New York Post.
Mattingly joined New York Post reporters Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on their podcast, The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, and revealed that among inquiries from several teams, one in particular stood out to him as having the chance to win.
“One team in particular really talked to me and talked to really my soul of what I like to do and see a value and it’s been very interesting to me,” Mattingly said.
Mattingly spent his entire playing career with the Yankees, amassing nine Gold Glove awards, three Silver Slugger awards and six All-Star Game appearances over thirteen years. He also served as captain of the team from 1991 to 1995.
Following his playing career, he served as manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and as manager of the Miami Marlins from 2015 to 2022, where he picked up the NL Manager of the Year award in 2020.
The Blue Jays fired their manager Charlie Montoyo on July 13 2022, replacing him with interim manager John Schneider. The Blue Jays signed Schneider to a three-year contract and gave him the full-time management position.
