The San Diego Padres added another back-end arm to their bullpen with a last-minute trade for Kansas City Royals closer Scott Barlow, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
The Royals will receive right-handed pitchers Henry Williams and Jesus Rios from the Padres. Williams is the No. 10 prospect in San Diego's system according to MLB Pipeline.
Barlow had been one of the top relievers in baseball over the past few seasons but has struggled in 2023. This year, he owns a 5.35 ERA over 38.2 innings of work while picking up 13 saves.
He is set to be a free agent after the 2024 season so comes with one-and-a-half years of team control.
From 2021 to 2022, Barlow posted a 2.30 ERA with 40 saves for Kansas City.
San Diego proved to be buyers at this year's deadline, adding pitcher Rich Hill and first baseman Ji-Man Choi in a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier in the day. It is 52-55 and sits fives games back of the final National League wild card spot.
